The term, "historical fiction" suggests a whole spectrum of images, as broad as the variety of persons who read the genre-- or refuse to do so.

I told a young college student one day that I was writing a historical novel.  No doubt thinking of the tedium of researching for some history paper in the library, she responded, "Oh, if it's fiction, then you don't have to do any research!". . .  More coming later
